After baby formula problems, Abbott Laboratories under DOJ investigation

Abbott Laboratories is under investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice, the corporate confirmed Friday, virtually a yr after it shut down a Michigan baby-formula plant after diseases had been reported.

The Wall Street Journal reported earlier Friday that the Justice Department was investigating conduct at Abbott’s plant in Sturgis, Michigan, citing individuals conversant in the matter who it didn’t identify. NBC News has not independently confirmed the character of the investigation. The Department of Justice didn’t instantly reply to a request for remark from NBC News.

Abbott voluntarily shut down manufacturing at its Sturgis toddler formula manufacturing plant on Feb. 17, 2022, after infants who consumed formula made on the plant turned sick.

The shutdown contributed to a nationwide infant formula shortage.

Four infants, two of whom died, had been sickened by a uncommon micro organism after consuming powdered formula made at Abbott’s Michigan manufacturing facility.

Federal investigators were unable to definitively determine the supply or sources of the micro organism, Cronobacter sakazakii, which may cause severe illness.

The firm signed a consent decree with the federal authorities in May that laid out what it might do earlier than re-opening its plant. 

The Food and Drug Administration stated when the proposed consent decree was announced that “the federal government alleges that powdered toddler formula merchandise manufactured at Abbott Nutrition’s Sturgis facility had been adulterated as a result of they had been made under insanitary circumstances and in violation of present good manufacturing observe necessities.”
